SECRET ORIGINS of a Dork Knight ... PART ONE
Over the past couple of months I have been wrestling with a decision... a decision that to some may seem like blasphemy. I recently decided to .... BRACE FOR IT..... stop buying weekly comics.

A great many things went into this decision, but the major ones are as follows:
- Cost of single issues, when multiplied by how many books I want to read, is CRAZY...
- The story nature of my favorites (DC Comics) have been getting more and more "dark and gritty". Don't get me wrong, I LOVE dark stories, I love realism in my books and I LOOOOOOVED THE DARK KNIGHT (a little super hero flick, perhaps you've heard about it....) but, when each issue that comes out seems to have another hero of mine dying or getting maimed, it looses it's luster.
- NO ROOM TO PUT 'EM ALL... they tend to take over a house.... if you let them.
So, as for right now, I will stick to just picking up trades of what I really want to read/collect... stuff that I don't want to miss out on. This way, i can display them nicely on a bookcase, rather than tuck them all away in a long box.

This little back story brings me to purpose of my posting... my origins as comic fan. You see, when you officially acknowledge the end of a part of your life, or a tradition, you mentally rewind to where it first took flight. For you lucky readers, I will showcase a few things that, to me, I cannot imagine my life as a nerd/dork/fanboy without.
The first thing I will discuss is:
BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES

...not a big surprise, as my logo for this website is a blatant rip-off of that show's logo...
I remember very clearly the day it first aired on a FOX KIDS afternoon and watching it with such excitement and joy. The show solidified my love for The Dark Knight; a love that started roughly 4 years prior. My parents first introduced me Batman with the horrible (in my current opinion) 1960's BATMAN show. As a kid of 5, it appealed to me and I loved it.... so, in 1989 at the age of 6, they took me to see Tim Burton's BATMAN. I freakin' lost my mind!!! WHAT WAS THAT?!?! That was AWESOME!!! Screw that Adam West dude... THIS is Batman!!! After that, with the Michael Keaton Batman poster tacked to my bedroom door, my dad would take me to the local shops to grab issues of Detective Comics or Batman.... then again, I realized that BATMAN was my hero. The comics surpassed the film and I was beyond hooked.
The afternoon that B:TAS premiered I was giddy and anxious, it was to be a day long remembered. I soon came to realize that the pure genius of the show was that is, very subtly, mixed all the past BATMAN elements into a Nerdgasmic cocktail of Super Hero AWESOMENESS... it was PERFECT.
It had it all, the cool 1930's vibe, yet still set in present day. The classic costumes from the comics, the dark, gothic atmosphere, and the moody Elfman/Walker score. It included an updated Dick Grayson ROBIN, which started my man crush on ROBIN that I still have today.... the dude kicks ASS.... forget the "Holy Crappy Dialogue, Batman" of the past. It was dark, serious and mature, but still fun. Something that is not easy to do... look at how often people fail to do it.... Batman Forever ring any bells???
I would race home each day after school, run straight for my bedroom and flip on the tube... and all was right with the world. Soon after, the toys and clothing lines would hit stores... I couldn't resist. The Sega games, the board games, and the Batman Adventures comic, based on the show would all find their way into my nerdy little hands. That comic series is still one of my all-time favorite runs on BATMAN.... I still snatch up back issues when I find them.
It started a domino effect that continued for years. During the course of the show, DC put out an Animated Series styled "Superman & Batman" quarterly magazine... I was an avid reader. The Animated Series spawned a spin-off, SUPERMAN: The Animated Series and later, BATMAN BEYOND & THE NEW BATMAN ADVENTURES. Further down the road we got the grand Finale, and in my opinion the greatest portrayal of these characters EVER.... THE JUSTICE LEAGUE/JUSTICE LEAGUE: UNLIMITED.

To this very day, I will still pop in my DVD's of this show and instantly become that 8 year old boy again, humming the theme song, dreaming of hanging out with ROBIN and playing video games on Batman's HUGE computer screen down in the cave... maybe taking the Batmobile for a spin? I still love the music, the sound design (those bats in the cave still sound awesome, as does that Batmobile's engine), I still get psyched by the old Hollywood styled intro cards to each episode and still love to stare lovingly at my old B:TAS figure collection. I still remember FINALLY getting THE RIDDLER and ROBIN at my local Target Store... 2 of my all time favorite characters.
The show made me now and forever a Batman FANATIC.
Thank You, Bruce Timm.... my wallet may be lighter because of you, but my heart is full of joy.
